Start by removing the existing grass and levelling the ground beneath where your bed will sit. If a lot of levelling is required, you can level a small trench around the circumference of the bed. Use a mattock or a trowel for this. Then, lay down a quality weed barrier to prevent unwanted growth from coming up through your soil.
Creating defined pathways around your raised garden bed will make maintenance easier and help prevent grass from encroaching on your growing space. This preparation might take a little extra time initially, but it will save you countless hours of maintenance in the long run and ensure the best performance for your raised garden bed kitset in NZ.
